Disfigurement is the permanent alteration of appearance. It covers scars, including raised and thickened scarring (keloid and hypertrophic scars), burn injuries and graft sites, skin discolouration and texture change, facial asymmetry and tissue loss, and contractures (tightening of scar tissue) that bind the skin and limit movement. Ontario law engages it on several fronts at once.

The threshold's own words. In motor vehicle cases, pain-and-suffering claims must clear a statutory threshold, and permanent serious disfigurement is one of its express categories, separate from functional impairment. The legal consequence is profound: a scar that disables nothing can still ground a full pain-and-suffering claim, because the legislature said so.

Permanency is the battleground, proven through plastic-surgery evidence on what revision can realistically achieve. "Serious" is assessed on the whole picture: size, location, visibility, and the life it sits in.
