Bilingual Legal Administrative Assistant (Korean and English)

Full-timeToronto (North York, Finch and Keele)$38,000 to $45,000 per year

About the firm

Vaturi & Cho LLP is a full-service law firm in North York serving clients across the Greater Toronto Area in personal injury, employment, commercial, real estate, criminal and immigration law. Our personal injury practice represents plaintiffs in motor vehicle accident, slip and fall, and long-term disability matters, including accident benefits claims before the Licence Appeal Tribunal and tort actions in the Superior Court of Justice. We are a close-knit team where assistants work directly with the lawyers on their files and see matters through from intake to resolution.

The role

We are hiring a Bilingual Legal Administrative Assistant for our personal injury team. A large share of our injury clients speak Korean, and you will be the person they talk to. You call them and you answer when they call. You explain what is happening on their file and what they need to do next. Then you tell the lawyers and clerks, in English, what the client said.

This is an entry-level role, and it is about language before paperwork. What matters most is that you are fluent in Korean and in English, and that people find you clear and patient on the phone. You do not need to have worked in a law firm, or in an office at all. We will teach you the accident benefits process and how our files run. There is less drafting here than in our other assistant role, because your day is conversations.

Your Korean and your English, every day

Most jobs use one of your languages. This one uses both, all day: Korean with clients who are injured and worried, English with the clinics, insurers and lawyers working on their files. If you can move between the two without losing anything on the way, that is the skill we are hiring.

What you will do

  • Speak with Korean-speaking clients by phone, text and email: answer their calls, return them, and keep them informed about their file
  • Explain appointments and next steps in Korean, including insurer's examinations and medical assessments: the date, time and place, what to bring, and what to do if they cannot attend
  • Write down what a client tells you and put it on the file in clear English, so a lawyer or clerk can act on it without calling the client again
  • Help clients and lawyers understand each other in meetings and on calls
  • Collect documents and information from clients, and follow up until they arrive
  • Call clinics, pharmacies and insurers in English to follow up on records and appointments
  • Answer new enquiries from Korean-speaking callers and follow the firm's intake steps
  • Record every call and message on the file, and keep the calendar accurate
  • Other day-to-day administrative tasks as they come up

What you bring

  • Fluent spoken Korean, and written Korean good enough to text and email clients. This is a requirement of the job: you will speak with Korean-speaking clients every day
  • Fluent spoken English, and written English good enough for clear file notes and short emails. Your calls with clinics, insurers and other law offices are in English
  • A calm, patient manner with clients who are often injured, stressed and unfamiliar with the legal process
  • Care with details: names, dates, phone numbers and exactly what was said
  • Comfort with email and basic office software such as Microsoft Word and Outlook
  • Discretion. What you hear about a client stays in the office
  • Able to work on site at our North York office, five days a week

Assets, not requirements

  • Experience in a job where you dealt with customers or clients, by phone or in person
  • Office experience of any kind
  • Experience in a law firm, a clinic or an insurance office
  • A law clerk, paralegal or legal administration diploma, completed or in progress

What we offer

  • Salary of $38,000 to $45,000 per year, depending on experience
  • Hands-on training on accident benefits and personal injury files from the lawyers and clerks you work with
  • Free parking on site and easy access by TTC (Finch West station)
  • A collegial office where the partners know your name
